Why choose PNG?

PNG uses lossless compression. That makes it a good choice for diagrams, screenshots, charts, interface captures and pages containing sharp text or line artwork.

The tradeoff is file size. Photographic PDF pages can create much larger PNG files than equivalent JPG output.

96, 150 or 200 DPI?

Resolution controls the number of pixels used to represent the page. Higher DPI generally creates greater detail and larger output. Use 96 DPI for lightweight previews, 150 DPI for a balanced result and 200 DPI when additional visual detail matters.

Why PNG often looks better for text and line graphics

Because PNG uses lossless compression, it does not introduce the blockiness or ringing artifacts that can appear around high-contrast edges in heavily compressed JPEG images. That makes it particularly suitable for charts, diagrams, interface screenshots, forms and pages containing small printed text.

Lossless does not mean the conversion preserves the original PDF objects. The page is still rasterized into pixels. PNG simply stores those rendered pixels without the additional lossy compression used by JPEG.

When PNG may be unnecessarily large

For a PDF containing full-page photographs or complex scanned imagery, PNG output can be considerably larger than JPG. If the image will mainly be shared through messaging, uploaded to a website or used as a lightweight preview, JPG may be the more practical format.

Choose resolution based on the final use

Use lower resolution when the image only needs to be viewed quickly on screen. Increase the resolution when the page contains smaller details that need closer inspection. Creating more pixels than the final use requires only increases processing time and file size.

PDF pages remain visually consistent

The converter renders what is visible on each PDF page. This means text, diagrams, backgrounds and other visible page elements appear together in the PNG rather than being separated into individual assets.
