Bates numbering gives document pages sequential identifiers such as CASE-000001, CASE-000002 and CASE-000003. It is commonly used to organize legal, discovery, records, audit and document-review sets.
Choose a starting number, number length, optional prefix and suffix, and one of six page positions. You can number the complete PDF or only specified page ranges.
Custom Bates number format
For example, a prefix of CASE-, a starting number of 25 and six digits produces CASE-000025. An optional suffix can create labels such as CASE-000025-A.
Bates number selected pages only
Enter page ranges such as 1-5,8,10-12 when only part of the PDF should receive Bates labels. Numbering continues consecutively across the selected pages while unselected pages remain unchanged.
Tested by EveryPDFTool
We tested Bates numbering on a six-page PDF using the prefix CASE-, starting number 25, six-digit padding and suffix -A. Only pages 2-3 and 5 were selected.
The resulting pages received CASE-000025-A, CASE-000026-A and CASE-000027-A in sequence. Pages 1, 4 and 6 remained unnumbered, while the original selectable page text was preserved.
Frequently asked questions
What is Bates numbering in a PDF?
Bates numbering adds sequential identifiers to document pages. A Bates label can combine a prefix, padded number and suffix, such as CASE-000001-A.
Can I choose the starting Bates number?
Yes. You can begin at 1, 1001, 25000 or another supported number and continue sequentially from there.
Can I Bates number only selected pages?
Yes. Leave the page field blank for the entire document or enter ranges such as 1-5,8,10-12.
Does Bates numbering rasterize the PDF?
No. The Bates labels are added as text overlays, so the tool does not deliberately turn each PDF page into an image.
Can I add a prefix and suffix?
Yes. Both are optional. For example, CASE- plus 000025 plus -A creates CASE-000025-A.
