Check which fonts are used in a PDF

PDF files can reference several different fonts. This checker lists detected PDF font resources and helps you see whether the fonts are embedded in the document.

It can also show font type, subset status, encoding, pages where the font is actually used in extractable text, and observed text sizes.

Check embedded PDF fonts

An embedded font includes font data inside the PDF. Some standard PDF fonts may be referenced without embedding their font files.

Check subset fonts

A subset font contains only part of the original font, usually the characters needed by the document. PDF subset names often include a six-letter prefix before the font name.

Understanding PDF font information

Font name

The checker shows the readable PDF font name. Subset prefixes are removed from the displayed name for clarity.

Font type

PDFs can contain different font technologies such as Type1, TrueType and CID-based fonts. The reported type comes from the PDF font resource itself.

Pages used

When extractable text is available, page usage is based on actual text spans using that font rather than simply assuming every font resource listed on a page is visibly used.

Observed font sizes

Font sizes are collected from extractable text spans. Image-only or scanned text does not contain normal selectable font information, so those sizes cannot be detected this way.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see which fonts are embedded in a PDF?

Yes. The checker reports whether each detected PDF font includes embedded font data.

What does subset mean for a PDF font?

A subset contains only the glyphs needed by the document rather than the complete original font.

Can the tool show font sizes?

Yes, when the PDF contains extractable text. The checker reports the text sizes it observes for each font.

What if my PDF is scanned?

A scanned image PDF may contain no normal text font information. In that case the checker may find few or no fonts used for the visible scanned text.
