Maximum file size: 50 MBMake a scanned PDF searchable
Scanned PDFs often contain page images instead of real text. They may look perfectly readable on screen, but you cannot search for a word or select individual characters.
This tool uses optical character recognition to add an invisible text layer behind the scanned page. The visible page remains in place while recognized words become searchable and selectable.
Existing text is not OCRed again
If a page already contains selectable text, the OCR process skips that page rather than replacing its existing text layer.
English OCR
The current searchable PDF workflow uses English recognition. Clear, straight, high-resolution scans generally produce better results than blurry, skewed or heavily compressed pages.
Frequently asked questions
What does making a PDF searchable mean?

Will pages that already contain text be OCRed again?
No. Existing text pages are skipped by the OCR step.
Which OCR language is supported?
The current searchable PDF workflow uses English OCR.
Will OCR always recognize every word correctly?
No. OCR accuracy depends on scan quality, page alignment, contrast, font clarity and other document characteristics. Important details should be checked against the original page.
