Best PDF Splitter Tools in 2026

“Split PDF” can mean two different things: extracting selected pages into a new document, or breaking one document into several separate PDFs. Check which behavior you need before choosing a tool.

Quick answer

The current EveryPDFTool Split PDF is best described as a page-range extraction tool: you enter pages or ranges and receive one new PDF containing those selected pages. If you need one document automatically divided into several separate files, PDF24, PDFsam Basic, Smallpdf and iLovePDF provide broader splitting workflows.

EveryPDFTool: extract selected pages into one PDF

The current backend accepts a PDF and a list of page numbers or ranges. It copies those selected pages into one new PDF and reports the number of pages in the result.

It currently does not generate several independent output PDFs from one upload. Password-protected PDFs are also not currently supported by this operation.

PDFsam Basic: advanced local splitting

PDFsam Basic is free and open source desktop software. Its split and extraction tools work locally and support page numbers, ranges and several splitting strategies without uploading the document to a web service.

PDF24: browser-based multi-file splitting

PDF24's Split PDF tool can divide PDFs through configurable split settings and states that the split operation does not re-render the document content.

Smallpdf

Smallpdf currently supports extracting selected pages as well as breaking a document into several separate files, with a visual browser workflow.

iLovePDF

iLovePDF supports custom ranges, fixed ranges and page extraction. It can either create separate PDFs or combine selected extracted ranges depending on the chosen settings.

When page extraction is exactly what you need

Extraction is useful when a large report contains only a few pages that must be submitted, when one invoice needs to be removed from a monthly statement, or when a section of a manual needs to be shared without sending the complete document.

In these cases, creating one new PDF containing the selected pages is usually cleaner than creating many separate one-page files.

When a true multi-file splitter is better

A multi-file split is different. It is useful when a scanner has produced one PDF containing several unrelated documents, or when a large document must automatically become one file per page, chapter or specified range. The current EveryPDFTool endpoint does not perform that automatic multi-file operation.

Page order follows the selected sequence

The selected pages are copied into the output PDF according to the requested page sequence. This makes extraction useful not only for keeping a range, but also when the desired result consists of specific pages from different parts of the original document.

Splitting does not solve file-size problems by itself

Extracting fewer pages can reduce the resulting file size because less content remains, but it does not compress the pages themselves. If the selected pages are still too large for an upload limit, process the extracted result with Compress PDF.

Does splitting reduce PDF quality?

Page-copy operations do not need to render the pages into images. EveryPDFTool copies the selected existing PDF pages into the new output rather than converting them to raster images.

When Remove PDF Pages is better

If you simply want to delete two unwanted pages while keeping everything else together, Remove PDF Pages is more direct than manually specifying every page you want to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Does EveryPDFTool split one PDF into several separate files?

Not currently. Its Split PDF operation extracts selected pages or ranges into one new PDF.

Can I extract one page from a PDF?

Yes. Enter that page number and the output will contain the selected page.

Does page extraction reduce quality?

The current backend copies the existing PDF pages into the output rather than intentionally re-rendering them.

Can it split password-protected PDFs?

No. The current EveryPDFTool endpoint rejects encrypted PDFs.
