The backend reads the EPUB package and processes its document items. HTML markup is parsed, visible text is extracted and each non-empty text segment becomes a paragraph in a newly generated PDF.
The resulting document uses A4 pages with fixed margins. This gives you a straightforward printable PDF, but it is a newly typeset document rather than a visual copy of the source ebook.
Images are not currently preserved
The current EveryPDFTool implementation extracts text from the EPUB document items. It does not copy ebook images into the generated PDF. An image-heavy EPUB should therefore not be expected to convert faithfully.
CSS and ebook typography are not reproduced
EPUB books can contain stylesheets controlling fonts, colors, spacing, chapter design and other presentation details. The current converter does not recreate those styles in the output PDF; it uses a standard PDF body-text style.
Why page count changes
EPUB has no permanent page layout in the same sense as PDF. A reader can reflow content according to font size, screen width and software preferences. When that content is converted to A4 pages, new page breaks are created.
